Art doesn’t just lead us to create things. It leads us to create ourselves.
Here’s some things I do just for fun!
Youtube Channel
YouTube has been a part of my life since the 2nd grade. I remember going home after school and using my brother’s computer to watch Beyonce music videos for hoursss. As I got older my interests evolved and so did YouTube. I watched funny vloggers like Fred as well as Crash Course ~everything~ and discovered the world of beauty gurus and lifestyle influencers. YouTube has added immense value to my life via education and entertainment, and I’ve always wanted to be a contributor to it’s amazing community of content creators.
I uploaded my first video in October 2020 from my iPhone. Since then I’ve uploaded 112 videos and my channel has gained 25,000+ subscribers, 750,000+ channel views, and 37,500+ watch time hours. Through this project I continue to develop skills directly transferable to my professional pursuits such as content strategy, public speaking, community building, influencer marketing, and more.
The 99ers Podcast
In 2020 when I reconnected with my childhood best friend, Joy, we decided to start a podcast. Coined after our birth year, the aim of our first season ‘Catching Up’ was to fill each other in on the past eight years of our lives and reminisce on our shared childhoods, identifying similarities and differences in our experiences, and using our stories to dive into larger societal topics that affect people our age. Proud to say we were trending in Kenya!
Season 1 was a year-long project that included brainstorming, branding, episode planning, outlining, recording, (re-recording), editing, setting up a website, streaming accounts, and social media pages, promotion, scheduling, and more. It required us to wear many hats, and taught us a ton about project management and the entire production process. It was really hard, really fun work, and we’re currently working on season 2!
Creative Writing Blog
Writing was my first creative outlet and one I always return to. My sophomore year of high school I wrote an essay titled A Letter to My First Love: New York City. After reading it, my english teacher took me under her wing and encouraged me to create a blog and continue writing. Since then I’ve created a few blogs (some of which I foolishly let drift into the digital abyss), continue to take literature and creative writing classes, and even published a short story!
Now my writing archives consist mostly of narrative essays, blog writing, journal entries, and short stories. Whether it’s a movie, a self-help book, or a brand, people love stories that are honest, relevant, and good. This practice continues to teach me how to tell stories well, deliver value, and create with purpose.
